The Student Support Services within UKZN’s College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science recently hosted a compelling company presentation by LIMA Rural Development Foundation at the Pietermaritzburg campus. Held on 23 May 2025, the event drew a large turnout of students eager to explore career opportunities in the agricultural sector and gain valuable insight into industry expectations.
Ms Caitlin Lamprecht, a representative from LIMA, delivered an engaging and informative session, offering students a clear overview of the organisation’s impactful work in rural development and agricultural support. She highlighted the company’s alignment with academic qualifications in agriculture, environmental science and social development, and emphasised the increasing relevance of sustainable agriculture in South Africa. ‘At LIMA, we believe in empowering communities through sustainable practices and collaborative development,’ she said. ‘We see great value in partnering with young professionals who are passionate about change.’
One of the session’s most anticipated segments was the discussion around internship and career opportunities at LIMA. Lamprecht provided a detailed walkthrough of the application process, stressing the importance of hands-on experience for students looking to enter the sector. ‘Gaining field experience not only enhances your understanding but also builds your confidence to solve real-world problems,’ she noted.
LIMA’s commitment to academic engagement was further underscored through its active research division. Lamprecht encouraged students to participate in collaborative projects, which serve both their academic development and LIMA’s ongoing work with rural communities. ‘Our research initiatives are a two-way street—we help students grow academically, and they help us find innovative solutions to rural challenges,’ she added.
The presentation resonated strongly with attendees, who appreciated the transparency and relevance of the information provided. ‘It was eye-opening to learn how our studies can directly contribute to improving lives,’ said one third-year Agricultural Science student. ‘I’m now seriously considering applying for an internship at LIMA.’
